Cornwood IV v Lewdown Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 10 Jul 2010 at 14.00
Lewdown Cricket Club Won 3 wickets
Match report
Two teams that knew each other well on a difficult pitch to defend runs, this was always going to be a tough game for Lewdown. Having beaten Lewdown earlier in the season Cornwood were full of cnfidence and decided to bat first having won the toss.
Their openers added 105 for the first wicket, aided by some poor bowling. As skipper Worth kept on reminding his players, this was a game to be patient. Cornwood knew we had a strong batting line up and they would have to post a minimum of 270 to be safe. This scoreboard pressure started to tell and as they chased quick runs, wickets started to fall. Fine spells from mark Martyn and Jake Barber accounted for 6 wickets. Cornwood ended with a challenging 245 all out.
In response wickets fell too regularly and at 90 for 5, the only outcome expected was a loss. 14 year olds Jake Barber and Jack Williams batted with immense maturity. Initially just occupying the crease, and as their confidence grew they started to dominate the bowling. Cornwood heads started to fall and the boys added a brilliant 100 partnership before a very tired Jack Williams was stumped for a personal best 62. Rob Squire came and went, which brought skipper Brenden Worth to the wicket. At this stage all 3 results were still a possibility with 50 runs needed for victory and only 3 wickets remaining!
Jake Barber continued to bat sensibly, showing an ever increasing skill of rotating the strike and playing the right shot for each ball. Good running and some timely boundaries ensured that Lewdown won an exciting game with just 4 balls remaining. Jake unbeaten on 62.
Hopefully this will be a lesson learned by Lewdown. Even thjough the opposition were scoring freely in their innings, we still had to bat on the same wicket. Patience really is a virtue and when we are developing 14 year olds of the quality of Jake and Jack, the future is most definitely bright.
